Three suspects aged between 36 and 37 are expected to appear in Queenstown Magistrates’ Court on 30 August 2023 following their arrest by Queenstown based Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) of the Hawks jointly with Gqeberha SOCI, Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG), Dog Unit (K9) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) on 29 August 2023 for allegations of murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Information was followed up on the foiled cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Kamesh, in Kariega on 28 August 2024 where a bystander was allegedly fatally wounded. After processing the crime scene in Kamesh, the Isuzu long base delivery van (LDV) which was allegedly used in the foiled CIT was followed. Information about a silver and white Polo working in collaboration with the Isuzu in question was also confirmed. The vehicles were followed exiting Gqeberha towards Queenstown.
The joint law enforcement agents in Queenstown allegedly instructed the suspicious vehicles to pull over. Upon pulling over, the suspects allegedly started shooting at the police. A shoot out ensued and three suspects were arrested when the dust settled. One of the suspects was injured and taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects were positively linked to the Kamesh foiled CIT heist the previous day.
The Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya expressed his concern about the Eastern Cape being a bait enticing National Priority Violent Crimes of which he believes should be brought to an end sooner than later. Trusting the potential of his workforce he believes that such crimes will be an issue of the past soon.
