The Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit in Limpopo arrested a 41-year-old Ethopian National male suspect, after he allegedly tried to bribe an immigration officer by offering him an amount of Thirty thousand rand (R30 000-00) on Wednesday 30 August 2023 at Mankweng Magistrate’s complex.
On Tuesday 29 August 2023 the Immigration Officer was approached by the suspect who alleged that he is related to the male accused, who was arrested for illegal immigration in Mankweng on 28 August 2023. The suspect offered the immigration offer an amount of R 30 000 in exchange for the immigration officer not to file section 212, and testify in Court during bail application
The immigration officer reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Unit and an undercover operation was conducted on Wednesday 30 August 2023. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday 30 August 2023 after handing an amount of Eight thousand rand (R8000-00) to the Immigration officer.
He is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate court on Thursday 31 August 2023 on charges of corruption.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the immigration officer for firmly declining the offer and the investigators for their dedication of detecting corrupt activities.
Police investigations are continuing.
