A police officer who holds a rank of a Sergeant, Keabetswe Kgope (35) and Elizabeth Zwane (52) were on Tuesday, 12 September 2023 arrested by the Germiston based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Sandton for corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
It is alleged that in October 2020, two suspects were arrested by officials of Leeuwkop prison after they attempted to smuggle drugs into the prison. The matter was reported at the Sandton police station and was attended by two officers at the station. It is further alleged that one suspect called his girlfriend, Elizabeth Zwane and informed her that he had been arrested. When Zwane came to the police station, she offered R5000-00 to the officers to release her partner.
When officials from the prison followed up on the case, they discovered that the one suspect was not detained and had been released by the officers. The matter was reported to the Hawks and the matter was investigated which led to the arrest of the two suspects.
The pair made their first appearance before the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, 12 September 2023 and were each granted bail of R2000-00 while the case was postponed to 03 October 2023.
The Hawks’ Provincial Head, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa commended the investigating officer and welcomed the arrest of the suspects. He further cautioned members of the public from paying enticements and encouraged them to report corruption.
