The high-density, multi-disciplinary, intelligence driven Operation Shanela which commenced on Thursday, 14 September 2023 until Sunday, 17 September 2023, resulted in the arrest of 186 suspects for an array of crimes including possession of dangerous weapons, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, burglary residential, burglary business, theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle, wanted suspect’s and malicious damage to property.
147 Daily wanted suspects were also traced and arrested during the period 08 to 14 September 2023, by detectives across the province.
Disruptive actions led to the confiscation and recoveries of alcoholic beverages, cash believed to be the proceeds of crime, copper and copper cables, dangerous weapons, various types of drugs including crystal meth tik and mandrax.
Vehicles utilized in the commission of crime was also seized.
The disruptive actions were executed in hotspots areas across the province which included vehicle check points, stop and searches, foot and blue light patrols, compliance inspections and tracing of wanted suspects by detectives across the province.
422 Compliance inspections at second-hand dealers, liquor outlets and premises, formal and informal businesses, farms and mines were executed.
29 vehicle check points and 10 roadblocks were conducted across the province during which 1706 vehicles were stopped and searched and 3364 persons were searched.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended all the SAPS personnel and other law enforcement agencies and departments for their commitment and dedication and for their continued support in the fight against crime. She also appreciated the community structures for their role in contributing to a crime free society.
