The illegal trade in vital and scares marine resources has a detrimental effect on the livelihood of our inhabitants and the economy of this country. Therefore, efforts to eradicate the illegal possession and trade in marine resources remain a priority and were dealt a major blow with the seizure of crayfish with an estimated street value, still to be determined, in Mitchells Plain on 16 September 2023.
Members attached to Mitchells Plain police operationalised information received of a storage facility at a premises in Philippines Street, Portlands, Mitchells Plain where the crayfish are stored and sold.
Upon arrival at the premises, members ensued with a search and discovered 1905 crayfish tails and 176 whole crayfish. Two suspects, aged 44, were arrested on charges of possession of West Coast Rock Lobsters without a permit.
The suspects were scheduled to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court on Monday, 18 September 2023 on the mentioned charges.
Meanwhile on Saturday, 17 September 2023 at about 22:00, members attached to Lwandle police were busy with crime prevention duties when they were alerted about a house in their precinct where abalone is stored. The members pounced on the address provided and ensued with a search which led to the discovery of 1544 abalone with an estimated value of R500 0000.
Subsequent to the discovery, the members arrested a 40-year-old man who was found on the premises. He was charged with the illegal possession of abalone and is scheduled to appear in the Strand Magistratesā court once charged.
