Six of the 11 suspects arrested on 14 September 2023, for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition were charged and taken to court while five could not be linked. The suspects appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 18 September 2023, and their case was postponed to 28 September 2023. They were remanded in custody.
The five suspects that could not be linked to the case of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition were however positively linked to seven cases of business robbery. The robberies were committed in Jeppe, Cleveland and Johannesburg Central Policing precincts between July and September 2023. They have appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 20 September 2023 and their case has been postponed to 27 September 2023. They have also been remanded in custody.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng has commended the team for their thorough investigation that led to 11 repeat offenders being put behind bars to face the might of the law.
The Investigating team, led by Gauteng Serious and Violent Crimes unit continues to investigate the possibility of linking these suspects to some of the unresolved robbery cases with the same modus operandi.
