Weekend crime combatting operations in full swing

An intelligence driven operation conducted by members of Operation Restore in conjunction with Crime intelligence, led to the arrest of three suspects between the ages 21 and 41 within two hours after the intelligence was operationalised and executed in the area of NY21, Old Crossroads. These efforts contributes towards the safeguarding of communities over the weekend when violent crime is rife.

Yesterday, Thursday, 21 September 2023, the members pounced on various addresses in the area as identified through intelligence and at the first address, they found a 21-year-old man in possession of drugs, a packet containing a small quantity of cocaine. The suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of drugs.

At the second unidentified address, the members arrested a 31-year-old woman who was found in possession of two .22 rounds of ammunition and a magazine. In addition, members arrested a 41-year-old man who was found in possession of a silver.38 Taurus revolver with five .38 rounds of ammunition.

Later the members also seized a 9mm Glock pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition after the owner did not store it in the prescribed manner, thus not complying with legislative requirements. A docket was opened to determine the owner’s fitness to possess a firearm. Meanwhile, the firearm, holster and firearm license remain in safe keeping pending further investigation.

The arrested persons will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges, once charged.

These efforts to eradicate the illegal possession of firearms that is regarded as a major crime contributor in the province, had been commended by provincial police management. These efforts is the start of ongoing Shanela weekend operations which aim to safeguard Western Cape communities, especially in the gang ridden areas. These arrest should serve as a deterrent to commit crime.
