High-density operation Shanela continues to squeeze the space for criminals

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena reiterated that police across the province will continue to squeeze the space for criminals when responding to serious and violent crime through Operation Shanela which is focused on enhanced crime prevention and combatting.

Police visibility was heightened over the past weekend through spontaneous roadblocks and stop and searches, and the authority of the state was once again stamped when 793 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, rape, aggravated armed robberies, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and many more others. Among those who were arrested, are 64 undocumented persons who will be processed to check if they were not involved in perpetrating any other crimes within the borders of this province.

In of one of the arrests on Friday, 29 September 2023, an intelligence led operation was conducted at Kgabalatsane wherein a drug laboratory was identified at Itireleng Section. During the search of the premises, police discovered all sorts of instruments and chemicals that are suspected to be utilised to manufacture various kinds of drugs. In addition, one vehicle belonging to a suspect who was earlier during the year arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) for the same crime, was found in the area. Two suspects, aged 30 and 35 respectively were arrested. They are expected to appear today before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on a charge of dealing in drugs. The vehicle as well as all the equipment were confiscated.

In Hartbeespoortdam, the local Crime Prevention and K9 Units arrested a suspect at Schamburg informal settlement for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition during an intelligence driven operation on Thursday, 28 September 2023. The suspect was arrested after his place was searched and a firearm and 17 ammunition were found.

The Provincial Commissioner welcomed the results achieved and urged members to continue with their dedication to ensure the safety and security of every citizen of this Province.
