The Piketberg Regional court today sentenced Jeandre Maarman to 10 years’ imprisonment of which four years’ are suspended for five years’ for dealing in drugs after he was found guilty on 06 September 2023. On 18 March 2023 the Provincial Organized Crime Narcotics Unit in Vredendal conducted a vehicle checkpoint on the N7 freeway when they noticed a vehicle stopping alongside the road and the occupants disposing of bag from the vehicle. The members approached the vehicle and searched the occupants and the vehicle on which they discovered a bag of crystal meth weighing 1,8525,25 gram and 2003 mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash. The four suspects were arrested and during court proceedings and excellent investigating work by Detective Warrant Officer Williams the accused was found guilty.
The provincial commissioner of the Western Cape Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile lauded the investigating officer and the prosecuting team for a job well done and added that the sentence must be a deterrent for those who think they can smuggle drugs in to the Province.
