Suspects behind bars for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Hanover Park

Increased visibility and intensified crime prevention operations within identified crime hotspots areas of Hanover Park are yielding positive results as police are clamping down on criminals and their criminal activities.

On Friday morning, 13 October 2023 members attached to Philippi SAPS were busy patrolling the streets of Hanover Park when they heard gunshots within close proximity. As an element of surprise the members parked their vehicle and went on foot in the direction of where they heard the shots being fired.

At Rywood Road, Hanover Park the members found a suspect in possession of a 9mm pistol without a serial number and five rounds. The 21-year-old male was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. Police investigation is ongoing.

In an unrelated incident, later the morning at about 07:00 members of the Anti-Gang Unit swiftly responded to information of a firearm and ammunition being stored at a premises in Downwood Road, Hanover Park. Upon searching the house the members confiscated a .38 Special revolver with five rounds. Enquiries brought to light that the revolver was reported stolen in the Western Cape during September 2023. Police arrested a 36-year-old male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

At about 17:00 at Lansry Walk, Hanover Park, a 17-year-old male was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a 9mm Vector pistol and 17 rounds. The serial number of the 9mm Vector pistol is still intact. Police investigations into the origin and ownership are in progress.

Once charged the trio are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on their respective charges.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile has commended the public and the members involved in the arrests and seizure for a job well done. He said that the confiscation and seizures of firearms and ammunition from the hands of ruthless criminals are saving lives.
