Sarah Baartman District: An intelligence driven operation executed by SAPS Nemato members resulted in the arrest of a Second Hand dealer and the confiscation of three firearms on 13 October 2023.
At about 13:30, a search warrant was executed at the dealership in Biscay Road in Port Alfred. On searching the premises a shotgun was discovered hidden inside a pool table. Further probing led to the discovery of two more rifles which was also found hidden in the pool table. After the owner failed to produce licenses for the three firearms, he was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of firearms. The value of the firearms are approximately R10 000.
The 74-year-old owner is expected to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 16 October 2023.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Maj Gen Zolani Xawuka while welcoming the arrest and confiscation, sends out a stern warning to Second Hand dealers who involve themselves in shady and criminal activities. ‘Our police officials will remain resolute in conducting inspections at Second Hand dealers in order to ensure compliance with the Second-Hand Goods Act, 2009 (Act No 6 of 2009) and those who falter, will be dealt with according to the Second Hand Goods Act, 2009(Act 6 of 2009),’ warned Maj Gen Xawuka.
