Excellent collaboration between police members resulted in the speedy arrest of four suspects allegedly involved in a house robbery last night, 15 October 2023 in Humansdorp.
It is alleged that at about 22:30, the complainant (64) and his wife were watching TV in the sitting room when three unknown men entered the house and pointed them with firearms.
The complainant was tied with cable ties and locked in the bathroom. His wife was also tied up in the sitting room. He was assaulted but no serious injuries sustained.
The suspects ransacked the house loading household items, electronic equipment and the owner’s firearm into the owner’s Toyota Fortuner. When the suspects left, he managed to free himself and his wife. They rode by boat to a neighbouring farm for assistance. The incident happened at a private house crossing a farm.
Soon after police were alerted, the Toyota Fortuner was flagged, and information revealed that the vehicle was heading towards Gqeberha followed by a VW Citi Golf. The Toyota Fortuner was found abandoned near Thornhill with all its contents unloaded.
At about 00:55 this morning, 16 October 2023, Gqeberha Flying squad members were quick to spot the Citi Golf on the R102 near Kruisrivier heading towards Kariega. The vehicle was forced off the road and four suspects (3 males and a female) were arrested. Three firearms were recovered, and all the stolen goods were found in the vehicle.
The suspects aged between 35 and 64 years old are detained on charges of illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property. Additional charges of house robbery will be included after detectives ascertain their link to the house robbery case.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Maj Gen Zolani Xawuka applauded the outstanding synergy between the various police stations (Humansdorp, Thornhill and Uitenhage) and the Flying Squad members. ‘The teamwork and dedication executed by our police officials was at the forefront of our success. Their quick thinking and efficient responses undoubtedly led to the arrest of the criminals. Criminals are warned that our police officials are not asleep and that they will be arrested for their crimes.’
