Accused sentenced for fraud and identity theft

Prince Mbaiwa was sentenced by the Randburg Magistrates’ court on Saturday, 26 October 2023 for theft of an identity and fraud. This comes after Mbaiwa applied for UIF as a temporary employee during national state of disaster on 26 November 2022. The application was then submitted by his employer, San Antonio at Spur restaurant in Sandton using fraudulent identity documents belonging to Kabole James Puane and he benefited an amount of R7 594.64.

An intense investigation was conducted by the Hawks’ Johannesburg based Serious Corruption investigation and it was discovered that the suspect is a foreign national who secured employment at Spur restaurant in Rosebank as a manager.

On Thursday, 19 October 2023 the accused appeared in court and he was found guilty of fraud, theft of identity and contravention of the Immigration Act.

The accused was sentenced on Thursday, 26 October 2023 as follows:

Count 1 Fraud to six months imprisonment

Count 2 Theft of identity three months imprisonment and be deported to Zimbabwe

Count 3 Contravention Immigration Act eight months imprisonment both to run concurrently.
