Two suspects arrested in Ventersdorp for possession of an Ak47 rifle

The South African Police Service (SAPS) management in the Province welcomed the arrest of two men for illegal possession of an AK 47 rifle and ammunition in Ventersdorp.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday morning, 25 October 2023, by a team comprising of Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team (TRT). The operation was conducted following the receiving of information regarding two males, who were seen sitting outside a restaurant in van Riebeeck Street, in Ventersdorp. Subsequent to the operation, the males were arrested and an AK 47 rifle and ammunition were confiscated.

The duo, Oliah Mthetwa (43) and Samuel Ngonyamo (41), appeared before the Ventersdorp Magistratesā€™ Court on Friday, 27 October 2023, for unlawfully being in possession of a firearm and ammunition. They were remanded in custody and are expected to reappear before the same court on Tuesday, 31 October 2023.

Investigations into the matter continues.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena thanked all team members for their collaborative efforts that resulted in the arrest. Moreover, he said the police will continue to work hard to remove illegal firearms that are used to commit serious and violent crimes.
