A total number of 13 firearms and 391 various assorted rounds of ammunition were confiscated across the Limpopo Province during the ongoing operation “Shanela” that was executed last week on 23 until 29 October 2023.
In addition, 660 030 ml liquor, 55 knives and six stolen motor vehicles were also recovered during the operations that nabbed 1 373 suspects for various crimes.
They included murder, rape, robbery with a weapon other than firearm, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, Contravention of Immigration Act, illegal dealing in liquor and stock-theft, drug related crimes and driving under the influence of liquor amongst other offences.
The operations were conducted through roadblocks, stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects. Moreover, they were aimed at compliance inspections at liquor premises, second hand goods dealers, spaza or tuck shops, taverns, drug operations, domestic violence incidents, crime prevention and liquor control operations.
During the operations, police seized 56 740 counterfeit cigarettes sticks, 33 dangerous weapons, 4 grams of dagga, 10 dagga plants, 23 grams of Crystal Meth, 14, 47 grams of Nyaope drugs and 1267 fines were issued.
The arrested suspects have already started to appear in the various local Magistrate courts.
The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has assured the communities of Limpopo that the police will continue to strengthen the battle against crime especially during the festive season. “We have put more boots on the ground to ensure visibility as we strive for a safer festive season. No lawlessness will be tolerated in the province “said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
