Police members detain five suspects on charges of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition and car breaking implements

Police members deployed in their respective policing precincts detained five suspects on charges of possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition and car breaking implements in isolated incidents on Monday 13 November 2023.

Harare police members were busy with patrols while conducting stop and search operations in Makhaza 36 Block, when they pursued information of two unknown males roaming the area. The members responded and combed the area. When they saw the unknown males who fitted the description, they approached them and in the process confiscated a revolver with ammunition hidden in a sling bag. They have arrested the 21-year-old man on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated intervention police members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint of occupants of a Silver Volkswagen Polo wanted for car jamming. Reports suggested at that stage that the vehicle was last seen in Bellville Central Business District. The members approached the area and spotted the vehicle on the R300 Highway, followed the vehicle which resulted in a high speed chase. The police members forced the driver to stop the vehicle and searched the three occupants and the vehicle. They confiscated car breaking implements and remote devices found inside the motor vehicle. The members arrested three males aged between of 31 and 40 on charges of possession of car breaking implements and the electronic communication act.

Meanwhile Bishop Lavis police members were busy with patrols when they noticed an unknown man walking down Kiaat Street in Bonteheuwel. The man fled when he saw the patrol vehicle. The members chased the suspect and apprehended him, confiscating a Norinco pistol with ammunition. They detained the 24-year-old man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Khayelitsha, Blue Downs and Bishop Lavis Magistrate court’s on the mentioned charges.
