Vigilant police officers detain three suspects in Nyanga and Harare

The swift response of vigilant police officers resulted in the arrest of three suspects in Nyanga and Harare on Saturday, 18 November 2023.

Police members from Maitland Flying Squad were busy with patrols in Nyanga. When they approached the corners of New Eisleben and Govan Mbeki Drive, they noticed three suspects who fled in different directions when they saw the patrol vehicle. The police members responded and chased the suspects. One of the males turned around and shot at the approaching SAPS members. The police members returned fire injuring the suspect. They recovered a 7.65 pistol with ammunition. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was a person of interest in a case reported earlier during the day for further investigation where a truck driver was robbed at gunpoint. The adult male was detained on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, armed robbery and attempted murder.

Meanwhile, Harare Crime Prevention Unit were busy with high density patrols. They followed up on information about the occupants of a grey Renault who were busy robbing community members near to the corners of Ntlazane and Oscar Mpetha Roads. When they approached the location, they witnessed suspects robbing the community members at gunpoint. The suspects fired gunshots at the police members who retaliated. The suspects fled in a motor vehicle with the police members in pursuit. The members forced the driver of the motor vehicle to stop and arrested two suspects on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and the possession of presumed stolen property.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Khayelitsha Magistrate court’s on the mentioned charges.
