A 48-year-old school security guard, Stephen Makgobatlou also known as Simon Matome was remanded in custody on Monday 20 November 2023. His court appearance came after he allegedly raped a 16-year-old grade 11 learner from Allemansdrift, Vaalbank.
The victim had to miss her Friday’s examination paper after the school security personnel forcefully took her from class where she was preparing for her Friday examination paper on Friday 17 November 2023.
According to information, the learner arrived at school early at about 06:00. She the first to arrive at school. She alleged that on her arrival, the school gate was partially opened and the security guard was standing next to the gate. She respectfully greeted him and proceeded to her class to prepare.
Within a short space of time, the victim alleged that the security guard came to her class and said he was looking for a suspect who was trying to break in.
He left her in class and returned with an iron rod. The victim alleged that the security guard instructed her to come with him, pulled her with her clothes and threatened to assault her with the iron rod should she make any noise. She was forced to the bushes where the security guard allegedly raped her. At the time neither the learners nor teachers were at school.
The victim managed to escape after the security guard left her alone to go and buy food. She was instructed not to go anywhere and threatened to stab her with the iron rod and throw her in the nearby dam.
After he left, the victim went to the opposite direction where she got transport and reported the matter to the police.
Immediate investigation was launched and the suspect was arrested the same evening. He made his first court appearance on Monday 20 November 2023, and was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to Monday, 27 November 2023.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela said a school is like a second home to learners. “Any person committed crime within school premises is more like a person who attack you from home. Those people have to spend time behind bars,” said the General.
