Police arrest alleged Facebook fraudster in Jouberton

The Provincial Organised Crime in conjunction with the Anti-Gang Unit and Public Order Police (POP) effectively traced and arrested a 46-year-old fraud suspect on Friday, 24 November 2023 in Jouberton, outside Klerksdorp.

The suspect was arrested after being linked with an incident in which the victim was defrauded after responding to Facebook advertisement of a Toyota Quantum vehicle. The victim allegedly communicated with the seller who explained that he wanted to get rid of his taxis as he is old and cannot continue with the business. Consequent to that, the victim drove from Welkom in the Free State with family members to view the said vehicle at Jouberton on Saturday, 18 November 2023. They were fetched from Tower Mall by a man who took them to an RDP house in Extension 24, Jouberton.

The victim met with the seller, then viewed the taxi and paid R150 000.00 through Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) after signing the purchase agreement. According to information, a group of about seven males who pretended to be police officers entered the house and demanded the registration documents and the vehicle key. However, the victim and her family members managed to overpower the men who ran away. The victim and her family members took and drove the Toyota Quantum to Jouberton police station where they were escorted to Thabong police station. A case of fraud was opened and the Toyota Quantum was seized.

Further investigations into the matter linked the suspect with the incident and he was arrested. He is expected to appear on Monday, 27 November 2023, in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court.

The North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the team members for their diligence that culminated in the arrest. He once more urged members of the community to be careful when responding to online advertisements and to rather meet potential sellers at public places for their own safety.
