The detectives attached to the Mossel Bay Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit ensured that a 63-year-old grandpa is behind bars in connection with the alleged rape of his granddaughter.
It is alleged that the man recently raped his 13-year-old granddaughter on three occasions while at his residence at Arum Drive, Mossel Bay. He also allegedly sexually assaulted the girl on Thursday, 23 November 2023. The matter was reported to authorities where after the investigation commenced.
The suspect was arrested at his house in Mossel Bay on Sunday, 26 November 2023 on charges of rape and sexual assault. He is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 28 November 2023.
In an unrelated matter, the same members arrested a 22-year-old man on a charge of statutory rape following an alleged incident at Nzonza Street, Mossel Bay earlier this year where the girl was allegedly violated. The mother of the victim reported the matter to police on Friday, 24 November 2023.
Investigation into the matter led to the subsequent arrest of the suspect who is scheduled to appear in the local court on Monday, 27 November 2023.
Furthermore, Knysna police arrested a 33-year-old man on an attempted murder charge after a 3-year-old victim was admitted at hospital with serious head injuries following an incident at Chungwa Street, Khayalethu in Knysna on Saturday, 25 November 2023 at about 16:00.
It is alleged that the child was hit with a brick during an altercation at a house. The victim was transferred to a hospital in George for further medical care.
The suspect is being detained at the Knysna police station. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Knysna Magistrates’ court on a charge of attempted murder.
Concerted efforts to eradicate crimes against woman and children remain a key priority of the police, especially with the 16 Days of Activism of no violence against women and children campaign which is being observed. Investigators attached to the FCS units who focus on sexual related crimes and crimes against our most vulnerable, children, were assigned to thoroughly investigate these matters.
