Police arrest suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm and abalone

Efforts to rid the streets of firearms led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man when he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Sunday, 26 November 2023.

Members of Mitchell’s Plain police were busy with a stop and search operation in Park Avenue, Westridge, when they searched the male and found a revolver with ammunition in his possession.

In an unrelated matter, members of the Maitland Flying Squad arrested a 28-year-old man on Sunday morning when they stopped and searched his vehicle on the N2 Freeway in Somerset West and found 1280 units abalone with an estimated street value of R900 000. The members received information about a vehicle that is transporting abalone and followed up the information.

Furthermore members of the Maitland Flying Squad arrested a 29-year-old suspect on the N2 Freeway on Sunday evening when they found 5721 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R2 million. The members stopped and searched the vehicle after they received information of a vehicle en-route to Cape Town transporting abalone.

The suspects are due to make their respective court appearances in the Mitchell’s Plain and Somerset West Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.
