Siblings arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunitions

A R4 assault rifle and 9 mm pistol with ammunition were recovered through the help of National Intelligence office that provided information to the team comprising of Provincial Task Team, White River K9 Unit and two private security companies in Malekutu, Kabokweni yesterday morning, Wednesday 29 November at about 03:00.

The team responded to information that led them to a house in Manyeveni where an unlicensed R4 rifle, believed to have been used by a suspect involved in a string of cash-in-transit vehicles robberies in the province.

The team arrived at a certain residential address where a 37-year-old suspect was found. When questioned about the firearm, he came up with information that led the team to his brother at Malekutu. The 32-year-old brother was found in the house.

The investigation led the team to a house where a firearm was found hidden under the base with 38 live rounds of ammunition were recovered as well.

Upon further investigation, a 9 mm CZ pistol with 15 live ammunition were found in the bedroom drawer. The siblings were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition. They are expected to appear at the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 30 November 2023. Both firearms were seized for further investigation and more charges could possibly be added against the suspects.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela welcomed the recovery of the firearms and the arrest of the siblings. “In this time of the year, criminals focus mainly on cash-in-transit crimes however the team definitely prevented another robbery and possible loss of lives,” said the General.
