A 38-year-old male suspect has been arrested by members of the SAPS from Middelburg Flying Squad on Thursday afternoon, 30 November 2023 on allegations of illegal possession of chrome worth more than R200 000.
His arrest emanates from information that was provided to the Police regarding a suspicious person driving a truck carrying some doggy consignment.
The information was then followed by the SAPS members and whilst on the lookout, they spotted the said truck which matched the description as per information given.
The truck was eventually stopped by the astute members. It was during this time that members discovered a bag full of chrome weighing at around 12,700 kilograms and to the estimated value of about R 209 550-00, even though the truck driver attempted to evade the arrest earlier but his efforts were futile. He was then charged accordingly and he is expected to appear at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 04 December 2023 facing the said charges.
The investigators are working around the clock and at this stage, possibilities of adding more charges against the suspects cannot be ruled out as the investigation continues.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended members of the public for the valuable for which they provided whilst also thanking Police members for their swift response which led to the man’s arrest.
