Mother sentenced for failing to report her 4-year-old boy missing

Mother who learned from the local radio that her child was found gets sentenced by Bloemfontein Court.

At about 17:30 on 8 April 2023, a Good Samaritan found the little boy allegedly roaming around walking in Bataung Street, Mangaung and brought the boy to the Mangaung police station.

Using the local radio station, the message was repeatedly read live-on-air for the whereabouts of the parents. The following day, on 9 April 2023, the child was taken to the Department of Social Development for necessary care while the police were searching for his parents, as no one reported the child missing.

After 24 hours, at about 12:00, the 26-year-old mother arrived at Mangaung police station, indicating that she heard on the radio that police were looking for her. She allegedly did not provide a reason why the child was neglected or why she failed to report the child missing.

The mother was therefore arrested for failing to report the child missing and child neglect. She was found guilty by the Bloemfontein Regional Court and sentenced to 3 years, wholly suspended for 5 years.
