06 December 2023; Patron rapes a female after being left stranded next to R727 near Bothaville.
On 8 June 2022 at about18:00 the accused and the 22-year-old met in a tavern. He was not known to the 22-year-old but was in the company of a lady known to the complainant.
At approximately 02:00 everyone disappeared leaving only the 22-year-old with the 25-year-old accused and the victim also decided to leave. Then later while outside waiting for a taxi, the accused appeared and got into the same taxi with the victim. The driver drove off and after a distance, while on R727 the accused and the driver got into an altercation that resulted in the driver dropping off the 22-year-old and the accused in the middle of the road.
The suspect started assaulting the victim and forced her into the bush just next to R727 and raped her. While in the process of raping her for the second time, the victim saw two unknown males passing by the bushes and started screaming.
The two males came to her rescue and the suspect attempted to run away. While the two males were busy trying to chase after the suspect, a police patrol vehicle appeared and the suspect was arrested.
Detective Constable Malearongwa Mokoena of Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation guided by Prosecutor Tshego Lebitsa. The suspect Gift Mgolomi 25-years-old was sentenced by Bothaville Regional Court to life imprisonment for rape.
