Law enforcement powers hit hard on illegal mining and undocumented persons at Rietnallei in Kagiso

On 06 December 2023, the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders collaborated and pounced on undocumented persons and illegal miners.

The multidisciplinary integrated illegal mining operation was led by Gauteng Provincial Head: ORS, Brigadier Chester Spiers

The operation enjoyed the support of South African Defence Force, Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Crime prevention Wardens, Mogale City Traffic, Mogale City Public Safety Office, Community Safety Patrollers and local private security companies.

During the operation, about 74 persons were arrested of which two were for dealing in liquor without licenses, one possession of explosives, eight illegal mining and 63 undocumented persons.

Illegal mining tools of trade were also confiscated during the operation and this included, explosive gel sticks, 46 Phendukas, 12 generators, 15 extension cords, 30 bags containing gold bearing material, 15 electrical motors, 15 chisels, 5 gas bottles and a compressor amongst others.

Brigadier Spiers thanked all law enforcement officers and partners on behalf of the Westrand District Commissioner, Major General Kekana for living no stone unturned into achieving these successes.

All arrested suspects will appear before the Kagiso Magistratesā€™ court soon facing different charges.
