Gauteng police are looking for the man depicted in the picture who may have information that can assist the police with the investigation of a case of ATM bombing that took place in Lambton Gardens, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday 14 November 2023. Anyone with information about the where about of the man in the picture, is asked to call Colonel Angel Mthethwa on 082 782 4233. Police responded to a complaint of two ATMs that were bombed at a petrol station in Lambton Gardens. Preliminary investigation suggests that a gang of about ten suspects stormed into a petrol station and held the employees at gunpoint. It is alleged that the suspects took the cellphones from the employees and cash from the tills at the shop before bombing two Auto Till Machines (ATMs) and fled with undisclosed amount of cash. Police have opened a case of business robbery and are searching for the suspects.
Meanwhile, the four suspects who were found guilty of killing two police officers who responded to a case of ATM bombing in Braam Fischer, Soweto, in 2017, were sentenced to fifty-five years and life imprisonment. On the 31 July 2017, police officers from Flying Squad responded to a complaint of a robbery and ATM bombing in progress at a petrol station. As the police were approaching, the suspects started to shoot at the police officers and shootout ensued. One suspect was fatally wounded and two police officers were murdered. Four suspects who escaped from the crime scene were later arrested. Thorough crime scene management and collection of evidence led to the successful conviction and sentencing of the four suspects.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended the investigating officer, Sergeant Tumo Mohutsiwa, who worked so hard to ensure that the police killers and ATM bombers are sent to prison for the rest of their lives. “This hefty sentence will send a message to those who continue to attack the police and those who are involved in ATM bombings. We will forever remember our colleagues who died while protecting the lives and properties of the people of our country” said Lieutenant General Mawela.
