Police members successfully disarmed five suspects in isolated incidents on Thursday, 14 December 2023.
Maitland Flying Squad members responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle on the N1 Highway. When they traced the vehicle close to a local shopping complex, they stopped and searched the occupants and the vehicle, resulting in the confiscation of two 9mm pistols with ammunition. The members detained four suspects between the ages of 26 and 47 on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
In an unrelated intervention police members were busy with patrols in Heideveld at around 20:30 when they responded to a shooting incident in progress close to them. The members drove in the direction and saw three unknown males hiding themselves. The members searched them and found a 9mm Norinco pistol with ammunition. They detained one suspect on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition..
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Goodwood and Athlone Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
