The South African Police Service Management in the Northern Cape welcomed the sentence handed down to a 19-year-old rape accused in the Kimberley Magistrates Court recently.
On Wednesday, 29 September 2021, the complainant left her three-year-old son with the accused in Colville, Kimberley. The accused allegedly sexually assaulted the victim in the absence of his mother.
The victim told his mother what happened and she reported the incident to the police. The accused was arrested and bail was successfully opposed.
The Kimberley Magistrates Court convicted the accused for rape and child pornography. On Thursday, 07 December 2023, the accused was sentenced as follows:
Count 1: Rape, 8 years imprisonment.
Count 2: Child Pornography, 2 years imprisonment.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola applauded D/Sgt Juanita Lakey for her dedication and hard work throughout the investigation by ensuring that justice is served and in turning the tide against perpetrators of gender based violence and femicide.
