Operation Shanela nets 3 144 arrests in the Free State

The operation aimed at stamping the authority of the state continues to put more suspects behind bars.

For the previous week, members taking part in the operation successfully managed to put more than 3100 suspects behind bars for different crimes.

The crimes include murder, where 11 suspects were arrested, 25 for attempted murder, 478 for assaults, 34 for possession of a dangerous weapons, 84 for drug-related crimes and 16 for possession of gold-bearing material.

Twenty seven suspects were brought to book for rape, while three were arrested for possession of a firearm. Twelve suspects were taken to custody after they were arrested for robberies.

Detectives arrested 857 wanted suspects during tracing operations. Stop-and-searches and multidisciplinary roadblocks continued to be held on major routes and backroads. In total, 373 illegal immigrants were also detained after they were found to be contravening the Immigration Act. Coupled with the illicit mining operations, 106 suspects were arrested, while 138 people were arrested for other crimes, such as contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

Operations continue and this is aimed at ensuring that the ground forces stamp the authority of the state. This will also make it possible for the communities in and around the Free State province to be and feel safe. We have more boots on the ground as the SAPS and have saturated the malls and places of interest to ensure that visitors and residents are safe during the holiday.
