The Ntuzuma Regional Court has on Wednesday, 17 January 2024 sentenced Mthembeni Phiwayinkosi Mkhwanazi (39) to an effective 50 years’ direct imprisonment after he was found guilty on four counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and assault.
On 20 August 2018, police responded to reports of a murder at the intersection of Malandela and Ntombela road where a taxi driver was found dead inside his mini bus taxi with gunshot wounds. Another victim was also shot and injured. Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened and following intensive investigations, police gathered intelligence that the wanted suspects were in hiding at Denver Hostel in Gauteng. One suspect was arrested at the Cleveland Magistrate’s Court where he was facing a separate matter of having been found in an illegal possession of a firearm. The second suspect was found at a hostel and he was linked to a number of murder and attempted murder cases which he committed in the hostel. The investigating officer successfully opposed bail and the accused remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.
Still on Wednesday, the Ntuzuma Regional Court also sentenced 35-year-old Mzwandile Kingdom Khumalo to 38 years’ direct imprisonment after he was found guilty for the murder of Mandla Mncwango whose body was found with multiple gunshot wounds on 16 December 2019 on Musa Road in the hostel. Another person also sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. In this matter as well, the investigating officer opposed bail successfully until the day of the sentencing.
