258 Firearms recovered as police arrest over 10 000 suspects in January

Various operations by police in KwaZulu-Natal have attained notable successes in the month of January 2024. Among the successes were the arrest of 10070 suspects for different categories of crime and the recovery of 258 firearms, 24 of which were rifles. Two thousand seven hundred and ninety six rounds of ammunition of various calibre of firearms were also recovered and seized.

The search for wanted suspects who are responsible for serious and violent crimes such as murder was intensified and to that effect, 190 suspects were arrested in connection with cases of murder and an additional 232 suspects were nabbed for their involvement in the cases of attempted murder. One hundred and ninety two people were arrested for cases of rape, whereas 210 more suspects were locked-up for the crimes of house robbery, business robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances and carjacking. Cases of assault remain stubborn and police are stamping the authority of the state in ensuring that the suspected perpetrators are brought to book. One thousand five hundred and twenty eight suspects were arrested for cases of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. With regards to cases of common assault, five hundred and ninety eight suspects were also put behind bars.

The protection of women and children was also prioritised and 190 people were arrested for the transgression of Protection Orders. For drugs related crimes, 1591 suspects were removed from society and a 321 more people were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor. Five hundred and seventy four people were also arrested for illegal dealing in liquor. With regards to stock theft, 70 cattle, 31 goats and 66 sheep were recovered by police.

Provincial operations and other targeted operations continue and police appeal to community members to continue alerting the police about criminal activities and other lawlessness. A strong relationship between the police and the community continues to isolate criminals and create safe and secure communities.
