Police in Brits and Koster disarmed and arrested three suspects for separate cases of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
In Brits, a 25-year-old man is expected to appear before the local Magistratesā Court on Monday, 12 February 2024, for unlawful possession of firearm. The suspect was arrested during a Crime Intelligence driven operation on Friday, 09 February 2024, in Primindia, outside Brit, after police received a tip-off about a Somalian national who was in possession of a firearm. He was later arrested after being found in possession of the firearm.
In another unrelated case, a 29-year-old man is also expected to appear before the Brits Magistratesā Court on Monday, 12 February 2024, for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police in Letlhabile received information about a man who was in possession of a firearm. Thus, the police responded swiftly and conducted a search at the manās residential place where latter was found in possession of a loaded 9mm pistol.
In another Crime Intelligence led operation which was conducted at Koster, Wednesday, 07 February 2024, a 50-year-old Meshack Mokone was arrested after he tried to sell a 9mm pistol to a police officer at a hitch-hiking spot in Koster. According to reports, police made a follow up on intelligence about a man who was selling a firearm. Mokone was consequently arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm. He appeared before the Koster Magistratesā Court on Friday, 9 February 2024, and was remanded in custody. The accused is expected to appear before the same court again on Thursday, 15 February 2024, for formal bail application.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded members of the community for collaborating with the police in making sure that illegal firearms are removed from the streets and that those who contravene the Firearms Control Act, 2000 are arrested.
