The Police in Limpopo through a joint forces by the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force, have on Friday, 09 February 2024 arrested numerous suspects for illegal mining and other offenses that include contravention of immigration act, possession of illicit cigarettes, kidnapping, assault and extortion as well as transgression of the road traffic act amongst others in the five districts.
During the execution of the operation, the police have confiscated mining equipment that include Isuzu tipper truck, TATA tipper truck, 7 x shovels, 3 x picks, and 1 x digging bar those which were found being used in the commission of illicit mining activities in various illegal mining sites.
It is reported that illegal miners arrested were caught digging different types of precious minerals and sand without mining permit and mining rights.
Amongst other exhibit seized were thousands of rands worth of illicit cigarettes and dagga, as well as illicit drugs.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers hailed the collaborative approach by teams involved.
The suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 February 2024.
