On 02 March 2024, SAPS Highway Patrol and private security members immediately responded to an incident in which three people were hijacked at Tsakane. The vehicle was spotted on the R550 at Suikerbosrand in Heidelberg where a high-speed chase ensued.
The suspects stopped the car and ran on foot while shooting at the officers. The officers retaliated, fatally wounding one of the suspects while another suspect was arrested. Two accomplices managed to evade arrest. Two firearms were found on the scene.
The arrested suspect will be charged with hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. Police investigation continues.
