Three suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and bribery

The vigilance of the police at Mamelodi East led to the arrest of three suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and bribery.

Two suspects were arrested on 11 March 2024 while police were conducting crime prevention duties during which the suspects were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Later the same day, another suspect reportedly came to the police station and offered a bribe of R10 000.00 for the release of the two suspects. He was immediately arrested for bribery. All three will appear in court soon.

In another separate incident, a team of SAPS Highway patrol, Ekurhuleni K9 Unit, EMPD and Springs LCRC members arrested five suspects and seized one firearm with a filled off serial number, ammunition, false number plates and housebreaking implements.

On 11 March 2024, the team operationalised information about alleged business robbers around the East Rand. The members strategically placed themselves and the suspected vehicles were spotted. An attempt was made to stop the vehicles which sped off, leading to a chase. The two vehicles were eventually corned at Boksburg CBD. A total of five suspects were arrested and further investigations will be conducted to establish linkages to other crimes.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has applauded the members for their commitment in fighting crime in the province, especially corruption and exposing those who attempt to bribe the police. “The positive attitude, honesty and integrity displayed by members through upholding and enforcing the law as mandated by the Constitution of the Country is commendable.

The public is urged to be whistle blowers and take part in stopping corruption. Bribery is a criminal offence which is punishable by law.
