Police officer summoned to appear in court for extortion

A police constable (46) stationed at Mamelodi SAPS has been summoned to appear before Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on charges of corruption and extortion.

This follows a complaint that was received from a complainant who was arrested after his sister opened a case against him for discharging a firearm after the siblings had an altercation in January 2023, however the matter was resolved through informal mediation and he was ordered to refrain from visiting the sister’s residence.

However, in December 2023, the complainant alleges that he was visited by a person who introduced himself as a Police Official from Mamelodi SAPS and informed the complainant that he was the investigating officer for the case of discharging a firearm opened against him. The officer further informed him that results from the Forensic Laboratory were back which link him and demanded R20 000 from the complainant so as to not arrest him for the same charge. The complainant informed the officer that he only had R500 in his possession, which was taken by the officer who further demanded R5000 and that he would come collect the rest of the money later in the month of December 2023.

The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation which subsequently led to the suspect being issued with summons and is due to make his first appearance on 22 May 2024.
