Suspect arrested in connection with the Bloemfontein mall robbery

An additional suspect, a male aged 44, has been arrested in connection with the cash-in-transit robbery which occurred near a shopping mall in Heidedal, Bloemfontein on Saturday, 25 May 2024. He was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 while visiting an accomplice at police holding cells. He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 31 May 2024. This brings the number of suspects linked to the robbery thus far to six.

Lebohang Shale (43), Louw Lynweth (42), Refiloe Mokhothu (39), Zacharia Kwili (58), and Monyaki Hans (37) have already appeared in the same court for robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, possession of suspected hijacked vehicle, unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, unlawful possession of explosives, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. They will be back in court on 3 June 2024 for bail information.

It is alleged that a group of armed suspects accosted security personnel shortly after a pickup at the mall. An undisclosed amount of cash and two firearms were taken. A tracing operation ensued which led to the arrest of the first five suspects by a multidisciplinary team comprising SOCI, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence, Visible Policing, K9, and Explosives Unit. Investigations continue.
