Suspects nabbed for traffic-related offences, possession of gold bearing material, illicit mining and trespassing in mining premises

Operation Vala Umgodi continues unabated from the 29 May 2024 to 1 June 2024. The following units were involved: Combat Team, Crime Intelligence, Surveillance Drone Team, Detective Services, Local Criminal Record Centre, Tactical Response Team, SAPS Airwing, and Roving Team members.

The following activities were conducted: vehicle check points, aerial observations to curb illegal mining in premises and gold smelting houses in Welkom and Vierfontein, surveillance drones, two intelligence-driven operations, disruptive actions, waylay operations and intensified patrols.

29 people were arrested for traffic-related offenses, illegal immigration, attempted theft, illegal mining, trespassing and possession of gold-bearing material (GBM).

Three suspected illegal miners, aged 31, 45 and 48 were arrested in Bryn Street, Naudeville, with items used for illegal mining.

Members conducted 35 vehicle checkpoints and 330 stop and search operations, where 461 people and 115 vehicles were searched. They visited 23 spaza shops, 17 power stations, 18 ATMs, 9 malls, 38 mine shafts and 79 mines.
