Armed robber sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment

Justice was served on a 32-year-old robbery accused when he was sentenced to an effective 12 years’ imprisonment on 18 June 2024 in the Gqeberha magistrate court.

In October 2023 at about 14:30, SAPS Mount Road detectives were busy with investigation in Steboneath Road in Sydenham when detectives noticed a man running with a knife and cellphone in his hands. The members became suspicious and pursued after him.

While the detectives were busy interviewing him at the police station, the complainant arrived at the station to report the robbery. He indicated that he was at the North End lake in his vehicle, a Toyota Corolla when he was approached by a suspect wearing a mask and armed with a knife. He was threatened and his cellphone taken. The complainant scuffled with the suspect and in the process, he was stabbed in his face and neck. He received medical treatment for the injuries.

The accused remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

On Tuesday 18 June 2024 the accused Harry Nelson (32) was found guilty on aggravated robbery and possession of suspected stolen property and was sentenced to an effective 12 years imprisonment.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuysile Ncata has welcomed the sentencing and reiterated that this sentence serves as a lesson to opportunistic criminals prowling the streets and targeting innocent people.
