Two suspects arrested for fraudulent licensing of motor vehicles

Two suspects, aged 41 and 54, were arrested on Friday, 12 July 2024, in Welkom and Odendaalsrus by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Welkom together with Bloemfontein Digital Forensic Investigation (DFI) as well as the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) based in Welkom and Odendaalsrus.

Their arrests stem from information that was received during 2022, by the Hawks about suspects involved in fraudulent activities related to licensing of motor vehicles. In the first incident, it is alleged that an Admin Clerk (41), who was based at Welkom Traffic Department at the time of the incident, was providing roadworthy motor vehicle certificates without the vehicles undergoing any testing processes. In another incident, information was received about a 54-year-old suspect, who is a civilian, who was allegedly selling fraudulent vehicle license discs to members of the public. The suspect was operating from his residence in Thabong.

Information was followed up by the Hawks in both incidents since 2022. Thorough investigation was conducted which led to the arrest of the suspects. The suspects are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrates Court on Monday, 15 July 2024, where they will face charges of fraud and corruption.
