Two people were critically injured in a drive-by shooting that occurred in Canelands – KZN.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance from the Verulam SAPS at approximately 16:13. According to the SAPS Officers, multiple vehicles were involved in a collision on Vincent Dickenson Road.
Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched to assist and on arrival discovered a red Zotye lying on its side. An extensively damaged champagne Toyota Etios was located next to it.
Two critically injured males who were passengers were located in the vehicle. They had been shot multiple times. The drivers of both vehicles were not injured.
The driver of the Toyota Etios informed Reaction Officers that he and his passengers are residents of Pinetown – KZN. He operates an E-Hailing service but transported a friend on a private trip to Ndwedwe – KZN.
While returning, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie overtook his car at the entrance of New Glasgow Road. The occupants of the bakkie thereafter opened fire on his vehicle.
He sped off and collided into a black Chevrolet Captiva that was travelling in the opposite direction. The SUV veered off the road and collided into a tree. The driver sustained moderate injuries. The Toyota Etios continued on Vincent Dickenson Road but crashed into the red Zotye. Both vehicles thereafter overturned.
Firefighters utilised the Jaws Of Life to free the two (2) males who were trapped in the wreckage of the Toyota Etios. Their vehicle was shot multiple times with 9mm pistols and high calibre weapons. The driver of the Zotye was not injured. The wounded were stabilised on scene before being expedited to hospital by ambulance.
The motive for the shooting has not been established.
