The Hawks’ Bellville based National Priority Violent Crime team have on 12 August 2024, rearrested two accused, Sihle Mabhongo (24) and Simphiwe Mzanywa(46) on a warrant.
The two are charged for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives and attempted murder. Mzanywa appeared briefly at the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on 13 August 2024. It was further established that he is currently on parole on another matter where he was arrested during 2022 and released in 2023. Mabhongo is currently in hospital under police guard.
Both accused are allegedly involved in an incident that occurred on 05 August 2024, where they were caught with an assortment of firearms, explosives and ammunition in Town two, Khayelitsha. When they were cornered by police wherein an exchange of gunfire ensued between suspects and police, which consequently led to eight suspects fatally being wounded.
The matter is postponed to Thursday, 15 August 2024 for bail profiling and monitoring of Mabhongo’s progress in hospital.
