Polokwane: Police arrest four suspects and seize R270 000 worth of illicit cigarettes

Police activated an operation following intelligence-led information about three suspicious vehicles traveling in a convoy on the R37 to Lebowakgomo direction.

Subsequently, the described vehicles were spotted. Police attempted to stop them, but they failed to comply. Instead, they sped off, and a high-speed chase ensued.

The members gave chase until at the Polokwane Smelters, where they managed to stop the three vehicles, a grey Toyota Hilux, blue Ford focus, and silver grey Nissan Almera. Upon searching the vehicles, Police found 43 boxes of illicit cigarettes loaded in the vehicles. Four foreign national suspects aged between 22 and 45 were immediately arrested.

The illicit cigarettes were confiscated as well as the vehicles.

“As our ongoing efforts to eradicate illicit cigarettes activities within our province, we appreciate everyone who had participated in these operations security companies who ensured that possible suspects are arrested,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

The suspects will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.

Police investigation is ongoing.
