The civil rights organisation AfriForum, in response to allegations that South Africa supplied weapons to Russia, said that President Ramaphosa and the ANC government are leading South Africa to economic suicide by now making the war in Ukraine, South Africa’s war as well.
According to AfriForum, the war in Ukraine is not South Africa’s war and the country must instead wage war against poverty, crime, corruption and failed centralism locally.
South Africa’s foreign policy must serve the country’s own interests, according to AfriForum.
According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, President Ramaphosa has allowed South Africa to unofficially declare war on its own economy.
“Even if weapons were not supplied, the visit by Russian ships and aircrafts and the joint naval exercise, already given the current international climate, created the conditions for South Africa to commit economic suicide. If South Africa is kicked out of the AGOA agreement, everyone in the country will be adversely affected, regardless of their position on the war in Ukraine,” says Kriel.
