When criminals take to the streets, the Western Cape police follow suit, but we answer with high numbers.
The past week’s Operation Shanela, a high density police initiative to bring stability to crime affected areas has proved to be a successful remedy with a total of 2011 suspects arrested on various charges between the period 12 June 2023 to 18 June 2023.
In a joint venture between SAPS and other law enforcement agencies, streets were saturated with special focus on serious and violent crimes, firearms in the wrong hands and drug related crime.
Road blocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop and searches, tracing operations, compliance inspections and high visible patrols were amongst others, some of the crime fighting initiatives that were conducted in Khayelitsha and other parts of the Province where additional policing was required.
Besides the arrests that were made, a total of 50 firearms of various calibers and 1005 various assorted rounds of ammunition were seized, together with 101 dangerous weapons, a large quantity of drugs, alcohol and presumed stolen property.
Operation Shanela will continue on a weekly basis and criminals can expect to feel the heat, despite the adverse weather conditions in the Province.
