The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested three more suspects in connection with the escape of Thabo Bester, taking the total number of suspects arrested for the matter to 12.
The convicted serial rapist and murderer escaped from the G4S-run Mangaung Correctional Centre (MCC) in May 2022, and was re-arrested earlier this year.
ARRESTS OF THREE G4S EMPLOYEES LINKED TO THABO BESTER’S ESCAPE
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the Bester investigation team had made another breakthrough in the case, on Tuesday afternoon, 27 June.
All three of the arrested suspects are men employed by G4S. Two of the suspects are aged 47, while the other is 37 years old.
“One suspect was arrested at his home in Botshabelo while the other two were arrested at their place of residence in Bloemfontein. All three were arrested on Monday evening,” said the police spokesperson.
The three men are due before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 28 June, charged with helping an inmate escape from custody, violation of a corpse and corruption.
12 ARRESTED
“Twelve suspects have been arrested in this case. The possibility of effecting more arrests cannot be ruled out,” said Mathe.
Thabo Bester and his co-accused last appeared in the same court on 20 June. The case was postponed to 8 August for further investigation.
