A chemical storage facility in Spartan, Kempton Park, burst into flames Wednesday night, leaving some parts of Ekurhuleni covered in massive clouds of smoke, emergency services teams said.

Although it is not yet known what is being produced at the factory, hazardous materials are believed to have been on site.

City of Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson Maswati Mdluli said the fire broke out at a property on Firestroke Avenue at about 23.40pm.

“The fire started at an Oricol Environmental Services chemical store and sent massive plumes of smoke across the Spartan area in Kempton Park,” he said. Residents reportedly heard a series of explosions believed to have come from the site.

The fire was extinguished, and Mdluli said no one was injured.
