Afriforum expressed opposition to Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), for the preamble of the controversial “Kill the boer” song during the party’s 10th birthday event at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Afriforum previously filed a hate speech case against the EFF, which was rejected by the Equality Court last year, but the organisation is currently sweeping the ruling. Ernst Roets, Afriforum’s CEO for Strategy, explained that the case on whether the preamble of the song constitutes hate speech is still pending and will go to the High Court of Appeal in September. Malema’s preamble of the song has sparked fierce debate, with some arguing that it expresses frustration with the ANC’s flaws and calls for land reform and economic transformation in South Africa.

Last year, Justice Edwin Molahlehi ruled that the song played an important role in the political rhetoric of the country and helped Malema establish the EFF’s stance on economic policy. He stressed that the interpretation of the song must be considered within its political context. The controversy surrounding the song remains ongoing as the legal process progresses to the appeal in September.
