POTCHEFSTROOM – Moeka Vuma police reacted rapidly to a Gender Based Violence incident and apprehended a man, aged 24, on Monday, 07 August 2023, for the alleged murder of his 18-month-old baby brother. The incident occurred at Kromkuil at Moeka Vuma near Makapanstad.
According to information at our disposal, an argument ensued among the suspect, his mother (39) and his grandmother (55). As a result, the suspect allegedly assaulted his mother and the granny. He then grabbed his younger brother who was sleeping in bed and hit the baby against the floor. Sadly, the baby died at the scene. The suspect’s mother and the grandmother were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Police were summoned to the scene where the suspect was apprehended and charged with murder. He is also facing an additional charge of assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH). The motive of the incident is still unknown at this stage, and the suspect is expected to appear before the Temba Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 10 August 2023.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and conveyed his condolences to the family. He also commended the police for arresting the suspect. Lieutenant General Kwena said that it is sad that some men continue to commit acts of Gender Based Violence (GBV) during Women’s Month.
